Jason Lemkin: VC – founder @SaaStr – SaaS enthusiast!

Hi Jason, a few lines to tell us a bit more about your career?

I’ve been a 2x founder selling to enterprise with 2x pretty good exits, and now do VC and angel investments and founded SaaStr, the largest web community for SaaS founders.  We get almost 3 million views a month now and will have 5,000+ founders at the ’16 SaaStr Annual in February.

In your opinion, what are the succes criteria for a start-up on a SaaS market?

The bar has gone up today.

Ultimately, it’s all about getting to $1m, then $10m, then $100m ARR as fast as you can without burning out.  You can get there super fast like Zenefits or Slack, or you can start more slowly and then accelerate, like Atlassian or Qualtrics, there are different ways to get there.  But to raise venture capital today, you probably have to be growing 15% month-over-month at $1m ARR or close to it.

Can you give us THE metric to monitor when you have a SaaS?

After $1.5m-$2m ARR I think top line growth and net cash burn tells you almost the entire story if you are growing 12% a month or faster.

Before that, I try to see if you have any leads, and where you get them, and try to see the future from that.  I call this Lead Velocity Rate.  And finally, growing your average deal size is path #1 to growing revenues more quickly.

What are your criteria for investing in a SaaS startup?

Three:

1- founders better than me (as a founder), adjusted for time

2- above average unit economics (see prior point)

3- company doesn’t have to be even remotely hot, but it’s important than in 12-18 months it can be.  If it isn’t hot then, then the Next Investor may not write the next check.

A word about Algolia and FrontApp? (2 great French SaaS Startups)

Love ’em both to death.  Founders better than me.  Better unit economics than I had at EchoSign.  And both weren’t “hot” when I invested, but now are.  Algolia is a pre-nicorn already and FrontApp has crossed into Initial Traction and is doing all the right things to build a nine figure ARR business.

What are your 3 favorite SaaS apps? Excluding those where your invest, of course 😉

My thoughts here are actually less valuable than they were say 3 years ago when I was running my own SaaS company.

Today, my “company” is tiny and we run it on Google Apps, WordPress, AWS, Mailchimp, Slack, Trello, Zenefits, and Eventbrite, plus a bunch of social tools.

Thanks Jason!

Perry Oostdam: the story of a successful pivot!

Perry Oostdam Co-founder & CEO at Recruitee a fast, easy, collaborative hiring tool!

Hi Perry, could you tell us how did you come up with the idea to launch your start-up ?

I’ve met my co-founder Pawel online -on a platform for entrepreneurs. We’ve started GeoRun (a gps-based gaming company) four years ago. When our team grew, we looked around for a handy recruiting tool. We couldn’t really find a simple and intuitive tool, and decided to build our own tool for internal use. Several startups in Amsterdam and Poznan started to use our solution as well, and we realized Recruitee could be turned into a separate business. One year later, we’ve pivoted our business and got the whole team working on Recruitee.

Could you introduce your app in few lines ?

Recruitee is a fast, easy, collaborate hiring platform. We aim to be an industry standard for fast-growing teams, proving them with both a backend recruiting tool (ATS) and career site editor (employer branding).

Would you share with our community one funny anedocte about your start up ?

When we started this project (Recruitee had another name back then), we bought a domain name on one of the big auction sites. We had no external cash and decided to bootstrap our business at least till breakeven.

After two weeks of being live, we received a very angry letter from a NY law firm indicating that our name was infringing on their copyright. Damn it, and that after two weeks!

We bluffed that our operations would stay in Europe, and our initiative wouldn’t hurt their business in the US. One week later, a domain name broker approached us, asking if we would consider selling the domain.

We ended up selling the domain name for an amount that brought us to breakeven ;-).

What are your 3 favorites Saas apps ? Excluding yours of course 😉

Intercom

Baremetrics

Trello

If you had to compare your start-up, would it be a movie, a sport or a music band ? Which one and why ?

A movie. The Godfather of course! Why? Because we make you an offer you can’t refuse ;-).

Bram Kanstein: founder @startupstash & previously @ProductHunt!

Bram Kanstein is an entrepreneur, Product Hunter and more! Bram makes us the pleasure to answer to some few questions.

Hi Bram, a few lines to tell us a bit more about your career?

I’ve been active in the internet world for some time now. Started at The Next Web with an internship and working in the Marketing team. Then I went on to work at an Amsterdam based investor, helping startups with product development and strategy. Tried and failed at 2 startups in between 🙂
Then I launched startupstash.com and joined Product Hunt as their European community manager. Now I’m off to pursue new adventures 🙂

Could you give us some tips to have a successfull launch on Producthunt?

Make sure your product is awesome of course 🙂 Find a hunter that has posted products in your vertical before. Check Whohunt.io for instance. Make sure you have a proper (not to long) comment ready + great images of your product you can add to the post. Stay active in the comments, thank people for upvoting (do this on Twitter) and try to leverage your appearance on PH with other publications like Techcrunch etc.

How do you select your Apps on Startupstash?

It took my about 5 months to index around 700 products. Eventually I chose 400 products to be in the first version of Startup Stash. I look at the product itself and what they offer. Basically it’s my own opinion of cool tools 🙂

It seems that you’re working on a new project … Timeforstartups. Can you tell us a bit more about this? 🙂

YES!! This is going to be a weekly show on Blab.im where I, together with an awesome co-host give feedback to 3 startups (20 minutes each, 1hr total). This will be live-streamed and shared on Youtube also. confirmed co-hosts are Chris Messina, Jonathon Triest, Owen Williams, Cody Simms, Marc Kohlbrugge, Levels.io, Emiel Janson and more!

Getpoint.co: Share and discuss articles and websites with friends, directly from any webpage.

Kiss and Love from France
Team SaaS Invaders

Thibaud_Elziere_SaaS_Invaders

Thibaud Elziere, co-founder @Fotolia and great Web Apps (@mailjet, @aircall, @mention…)

Thibaud Elziere is a fabulous french entrepreneur, he especially co-founded Fotolia (bought in 2014 by Adobe for 800 million dollars) as well as the startup studio Efounders which has performed Mailjet, Aircall, Mention, TextMaster or Front.

Thibaud makes us the pleasure to answer to some few questions!

Hi Thibaud, a few lines to tell us a bit more about your career?

I caught the entrepreneurship virus pretty early on – I never even worked as an employee. I decided to build Fotolia while I was still studying. After 4 years of building Fotolia, I built Zilok in 2008. 3 years later, in 2011, I met Quentin Nickmans to create eFounders. And it is what I’ve been working every single day since.

eFounders, what is it and how it works? If I have a great idea for a new SaaS app, can I contact you?

eFounders is a startup studio. Our process is to develop our business ideas inside our studio; once an idea is validated and falls under our building thesis, we “hire” two co-founders to develop the business with us and make it skyrocket. We build 3 to 4 SaaS startups a year. After 18 months, each startup becomes independent. So far, we have built 7 startups used my millions of businesses.
As a startup studio, we generate business idea internally. You can always contact me to talk about SaaS, I love it ; but it won’t become an eFounders startup! If you are an exceptional entrepreneur (business or tech), on the other hand, you are more than welcome to apply to become our co-founder.

In your opinion, what are the succes criteria for a start-up on a SaaS market?

1. The Market positioning. We believe in what we call the “Fortune 5 Million” market opportunity (as opposed to “Fortune 500”). Millions of companies that use your product, every day, and globally.

2. The team: in order to build a SaaS unicorn, you need a formidable founding team with both exceptional business and technical skills

3. A great mindset: to me, your startup mindset and culture should rely on resilience, ambition and a bit of craziness in order to succeed.

Can you give us THE metric to monitor when you have a SaaS software?

Definitely: Churn. Churn changes everything, it makes the difference between a pony and a unicorn. The cost of a huge churn, when your revenue is important, kills your business. And at the same time, the profit of a negative churn makes a very small business looks like the next unicorn.

Rather than an advice,  could you share with us a failure, regret?

About a failure: we recently shut down one of our apps, Solved.io after a few weeks in beta. Although we were very fond of the team and the product, we had to face the truth: we did not find a product-market fit. It was necessary decision to make and we learned a lot from it, yet it was a hard one.

And if there is one thing to regret… maybe not having built Slack? 🙂

What are your 3 favorite SaaS apps? Excluding those from eFounders, of course 😉

Algolia: because they have a disruptive technology which is pretty rare for a SaaS solution (Disclaimer: I am an investor)

Slack (of course): because it completely changed the way we communicate within a company. And all the integrations and the endless possibilities make it an awesome product.

Workable: we like the team and the product at efounders – because we receive so many job applications every day, Workable has helped us streamline the process a lot.

Laura Calmore of France Digitale : “#JouerCollectif . That’s our DNA….”

September 15, 2015, France Digitale opens up the Carreau du Temple in Paris, starting from 13h, for the third France Digitale Day, a meeting that became a must for all players in the digital ecosystem. More than 2,000 people are expected. A day that promises to be rich in debates, experiences and meetings with entrepreneurs, investors, large groups and without forgetting the politicians. To talk a little bit more about this event, we met Laura Calmore, marketing and event manager at France Digitale.

LAST MINUTE, you want take part to the France Digitale Day! With SaaS Invaders you can get your ticket!! Have a look at the end of this article to find out more!

Saas Invaders : Could you remind us in few words what is France Digitale?

Laura Calmore : An association that brings together the champions of digital entrepreneurship: start-ups with strong growth plans and potential investors (venture capitalists and business angels).

Tell us the “pitch” of France Digitale Day 2015!

I can only quote Olivier & Marie (NDLD : Olivier Mathiot et Marie Ekeland) on this, what else can I pitch besides : “In its third year, France Digitale set its sights even higher for digital progress, startups and attracting talent and business to our nation.”Battle for Greatness” will be a major event carved into stone because on September 15, we all come together (entrepreneurs, investors and thinkers of our time) to collectively write the real political program for France’s digital glory.

We are inviting ourselves to the table and into the political agenda of the 2017 political candidates, just like we did at the time of the pigeons (#geonpi). For those currently in office, they’re starting their great sprint for the last 18 months of their term;and for everyone else, this is their moment to debate big ideas that will shape the future and leave small political squabbles behind.”

Photo en couleur de la team de France Digitale

The France Digitale team

Which elements will allow you to say that this edition is a success?

Our ambition and the members & partners that support us. This year we’re taking it to the next level. We’re taking an action France needs to get out of the economic crisis and renew it’s digital and entrepreneurial zest. The stakes at play are employment, growth, and international influence of our businesses. Together let’s make a universal, neutral, and pragmatic case for digital. FD Day “Battle For Greatness” will be the first political meeting of our new generation, yesterday’s Pigeons are becoming proactive drivers of change today.

France Digitale just celebrated its 3 years, what do you keep in mind from these few years?

#JouerCollectif . That’s our DNA and one of our values.

Olivier Mathiot, co-president of France Digitale says that France has many strengths but also some weaknesses on the global digital market, can you give us more details?

The rendez-vous was set for Sept the 15th, meet us there and you’ll have your answer 🙂

Otherwise, what are your three favorite apps?
